After switching multiple email marketing services, I have decided to compare the top email marketing services. My unbiased iContact vs Constant Contact vs GetResponse comparison will help you decide which service is best for you.

iContact vs Constant Contact vs GetResponse – Which service is more popular?

While popularity does not play a role in my final decision, it is important to look at the numbers.

Luckily, these are the top three email marketing services, so you can expect them to be recognized brands that most online marketers turn to.

iContact, Constant Contact, and GetResponse are used by nearly two million customers combined. Out of the three brands above, iContact is the more popular brand – the service is used by over 700,000 marketers.

Which email marketing service is cheapest?

While I do not think that “cheapest” is always the best option, it is important to go with the service that you can afford. It is a good idea to choose an email marketing service that you plan on using for a while because moving your subscriber lists to a new service is a pain.

Here is how iContact, Constant Contact, and GetResponse compare in terms of pricing (comparison of cheapest plan only):

It is hard to determine which service is cheapest because of the different subscriber levels.

For example, 5,000 subscribers will cost you $45 on GetResponse, $52 on iContact, and $90 on Constant Contact.

So if you go by the numbers, GetResponse is cheapest.

  • Constant Contact offers a 60-day free trial period. This will give you ample time to see if the service is right for you.

  • Constant Contact has a responsive customer support department.
  • GetResponse guarantees 99% deliverability rates whereas iContact and Constant Contact advertise 98%.
  • GetResponse gives you access to over 700 templates that you can use for your email campaigns.
  • GetResponse offers the “Auto-responder 2.0” with advanced features that you will not find elsewhere.

I am in favor of iContact here because multi-user functionality is a must for my business. I do not like the idea of having to upgrade to a more expensive plan just to have this feature enabled for me.

I am also in favor of iContact because it integrates well with other services like ecommerce platforms, email providers, etc.

Pros & cons

No product or service is perfect – we can only dream of perfection. Everything in this world has its strengths and weaknesses.

This is not any different for email marketing services.

1) iContact

  • 600 free email templates with different layout formats such as one-column, multi-column, postcard, etc.
  • The “Message Builder” feature enables you to create messages using drag and drop blocks. An alternative would be to use HTML.
  • Newsletter sign up forms can be inserted onto web and Facebook pages.
  • You have the ability to post your archived messages as blog posts.
  • You can track various statistics such as the amount of subscribers that open or click on your email, trending messages, etc.
  • The auto-responder feature enables you to send triggered email campaigns.
  • iContact uses the latest anti-spam technology to boost the deliverability of your emails.

Cons

  • No matter what plan you are on, you are limited on the amount of emails that you can send to your subscribers (six times your subscriber limit, the 500 subscriber plan allows you to send 3,000 emails per month).
  • Limited to 5 MB of storage space for your logos and images.
  • You have to contact their customer support department to sign up for any of their plans exceeding 15,000 subscribers.

2) Constant Contact

  • The company has been in business since 1996. It has maintained a good reputation over the years.
  • Strong list management tools that enable you to import and export your existing subscriber lists from Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Sage, etc.
  • Comprehensive campaign reporting that includes important statistics such as bounce rate, click-through rate, and opt-out.
  • Intuitive and user-friendly account dashboard.
  • Excellent features for creating email campaigns and editing templates via the drag and drop editor.
  • User-friendly mobile app that enables you to manage your campaigns on the go.
  • Constant Contact complies with the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003.

Cons

  • Constant Contact is overly priced when compared to other email marketing services.
  • You will have to call Constant Contact to cancel your account. You do not have the option to cancel your account online.
  • Requires an upgrade to one of their “Email Plus” plans for advanced features such as auto-responder, surveys, coupons, and multi-user functionality.

3) GetResponse

  • GetResponse is very affordable for both small and large plans, especially when compared to other email marketing services.

  • The ability to use and design custom landing pages.
  • An advanced auto-responder feature that is capable of sending triggered email messages based on time or action.
  • The ability to see a live preview of your email before you it is sent.
  • Advanced email analytics tools for tracking campaigns, ROI, auto-responders, and segmentations.
  • An industry-leading deliverability rate of 99%.

Cons

  • Multi-user functionality is not available on any of the “Email” plans. You will have to upgrade to one of the “Pro” plans to enable multi-user functionality.
  • The user interface has some quirky features that may be annoying for some users.
  • Strict anti-policies that may restrict what you can include in your email campaigns.

iContact vs Constant Contact vs GetResponse – Which email marketing service should I join?

Prior to making a final decision and committing to any of the email marketing service above, it is important to sit down and see if you really need one in the first place.

If you do not have a proper method for capturing subscribers or do not have anything to send them, email marketing is not for you.

If you have a small subscriber list and do not plan on growing it, I would suggest going with a free email marketing service such as MailChimp.

Most of the email marketing services out there do an excellent job at sending email newsletters. So, unless you need something extraordinary, I would recommend going with the service that you are most comfortable with.

But, every comparison needs a winner.

I am in favor of iContact because it has a small edge over Constant Contact and GetResponse in certain areas.

I recommend iContact because it is a reputable brand that integrates well with other products and services (things like ecommerce platforms, blogging platforms, email service providers, etc.). Additionally, iContact offers multi-user functionality which is a plus for any online business.

    Hm… nice comparison. I’ve recently started using GetResponse and it’s a good service. I especially love its landing page feature.
